Freshwater Lifeboat is an independent organisation and is not connected to any other Lifeboat Institution. We are part of the Solent Sea-Rescue Organisation (SSRO) which co-ordinates the activities of nine similarly declared independent units which provide rescue services around the Solent and the Isle of Wight. Our patrol area runs from Saint Catherines on the southern tip of the island to Hurst Point in the Solent and out a distance of about 30 miles into the English Channel. The cost to buy and equip a new lifeboat of the type we need to operate in all weather out to mid Channel is in around £200,000 so our fundraisers and friends in the community are kept very busy. Freshwater Lifeboat receive a small grant from the SSRO which contributes to our operating expenses of over £30,000 per annum. However the majority of these costs and all of the capital costs of boats and shore facilities is provided by fundraising from within the local community and visitors to Freshwater Bay where the unit is based. A major source of funds is the Lifeboat Gift Shop, attached to the boathouse, and located in Freshwater Bay. This is operated entirely by volunteers and is a popular and busy spot during the summer months serving hot and cold drinks, gifts and ice-creams to visitors to the bay. The unit holds several open days each year where the boats are on display to the public and various fund-raising events take place. Membership is available for an annual subscription of £2 or Lifetime membership for a minimum donation of £50. Donations are always gratefully received. HELP! Anyone who can help us either by donation or by assisting in the running of the shop or fundraising events should contact our chairman. Roy Wyld Telephone 01983 754008
